How it is built

Color is never the only signal

The rooms go by color, which is a problem worth taking seriously on a site organized around them. So every room states its ages in its heading and carries its name in words; the colored square beside it repeats that information rather than carrying it. Nothing on this site can only be understood by seeing a hue.

It works without a mouse

Every control can be reached by keyboard and shows a visible focus ring. Interactive targets are at least 44 pixels. The first thing on every page is a skip link to the main content.

It works without JavaScript

The pages are plain HTML, served whole. The age control on the rooms page is a set of ordinary in-page links over content that is already there, so with scripts off every room is still visible with its ages. The navigation menu opens by script on a small screen and is simply shown when scripts are unavailable. Search is the one page that needs scripts, and it says so and links to everything instead.

It works at any size

The layout reflows to a single column and requires no sideways scrolling at 320 pixels. Text scales with your browser’s own settings rather than being locked to a pixel size. Tables of tuition become scrollable blocks rather than squeezing their numbers.

It respects your settings

If your system asks for reduced motion, the one animated behavior on the site, the scroll that happens when you pick an age, becomes an instant jump.

Pictures are described

Every photograph carries alternative text describing what is in the room, not a filename and not a decorative label. Captions sit below the image and add something rather than repeating the alt text.
